Bone broth should be a staple in every household. Not only does making a bone broth allow you to utilise & respect every part of the animal but it is easy to make and PACKED with nutrients.

  • Weight loss: research shows that is you are carrying extra weight you may have higher levels of bacteria called ‘firmicutes’ which extracts a higher ratio of calories from your daily food intake. Bone broth contains insanely high levels of amino acids which has shown to reduce ‘firmicutes’ in the gut, therefore aiding weight loss.
  • Collagen: bone broth is full of collagen helping to reduce inflammation and heal and seal the gut lining. Collagen also makes up 70% of the protein in our skin hence bone broth nourishes the skin, improves skin elasticity and smoothness, sun damage and cellulite and heals skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis from the inside out.
  • Glycine: is one of the amino acids found in bone broth. Glycine is a precursor to GABA (neurotransmitter) and slows down the production of norepinephrine hence helps improve quality of sleep, reduce tension, improve brain function, and reduce anxiety.
  • Glutamine: another one of the amazing amino acids found in bone broth which helps to feed the beneficial microbiome, regulate tight jap junction proteins, promote enterocyte proliferation, and suppress pro-inflammatory signaling. Overall repair and rebuild the gut and any damages.
  • Probiotics: its all well and good to be eating probiotics but we need to create a supportive environment for the bacteria to live in and feed off, that’s right, BONE BROTH!

Method:

So how do we make this beautiful superfood, its simple…

  1. You can either buy bones themselves from butchers (super cheap!), or my favourite thing to do is use the carcass and bones left over after a roast. Make sure you are utilizing the best possible meat/bones to start with; organic, pasture-raised, free range.
  2. Put bones into pot. Cover with water.
  3. Bring to boil then lower temperature to a simmer, still enough to have a few bubbles coming up.
  4. You can boil for up to 24hours but usually 8hours is plenty. Put it on in the morning before work and leave it to cook for the day.
  5. You may leave it plain, add salt or whatever spices your heart desires e.g. ginger, lemon, turmeric, pepper, thyme, rosemary.
  6. When home simply remove the bones and the broth can be made into the base for a soup, added to your meals throughout the week or simply enjoyed as a broth.
  7. You can leave the broth in the fridge for up to 1 week or freeze.
